SYNOPSIS
Since her childhood, Katsushika Oei, the daughter of the painter Katsushika Hokusai’s (1760-1849), was captivated by painting. Oei is by his side as he completes his iconic Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. When Hokusai grew too old to wield his brush freely, Oei becomes his ‘brush’ and paints on his behalf. It’s during this time when she starts to grow a strong fascination with colors as she finally develops her own painting style.
Directed by Taku Katô, the film has been the winner of the Creative Excellence 2018 award for the United States Film and Video festival.
COMMENT
The film is the dramatization of the real story of Katsushika Oei, daughter of the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). A great artist in itself, but who was never satisfied with his own abilities. After his father had a stroke, she took care of him and worked closely with him for almost 20 years. The film also includes the visit that Oei did in London to see the Hokusai: Beyond the Wave </ i> exhibition at the British Museum. A sample that included works by the father and the daughter.
